Smart Kids and Smart Parents Are

?There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children.

One of these is roots, the other, wings.

SMART KIDS ARE?

SECURE with self, family and community. Security is the first essential ? physical safety, social and emotional support, fun and challenging learning activities.

MOTIVATED by internal and external incentives. Motivation is the freedom to follow and develop our interests and talents.

ADAPTABLE to a changing world with multiple intelligences. Adaptation to inevitable and ever-faster changes is a must. Demanding tasks are opportunities to grow physically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually.

RESILIENT in positively managing failure. Resilience means developing our executive functions of intellectual and emotional strength and character to move beyond obstacles toward success.

TENACIOUS in achieving long-term goals through self-regulation and behavioral control. Tenacity is being tough enough to stick with it?persistence wins.

In a word, SMART kids are PROACTIVE ? no child or adult can be motivated, adaptable, resilient or tenacious enough to succeed if they simply sit back and watch the world go by. Being proactive is clearly the responsibility of each of us ? taking responsibility for our own intellectual and social development, our life successes and failures, and our own behaviors.

SMART PARENTS ARE?

CARING. Value your children, and show it.

CONSISTENT. Keep at it day after day.

CULTIVATORS. Children need love, structure, discipline ? give it to them.

CHALLENGERS. Push the edges ? teach your children how to fail successfully.

CHEERLEADERS. Praise does wonderful things for our psyche.
